JEBEL EL KEST VIA NW RIDGE
Tackle the highest mountain in the Anti-Atlas via the broad North West ridge providing an absorbing route full of scrambling interest. With over 1000m of height gain and 2km of ridge, a good level of fitness and some previous mountaineering or scrambling experience is required to complete this epic day out.
Commencing in Tafraout, you will be transported to the high mountain villlage of Anergui via narrow mountain roads which hug the hillside (not for the faint hearted). From the village we begin our ascent which initially traverses beneath the towering quartzite cliffs above Anergui to a long steep gully to a col. From here the path weaves its way alongside a steep gorge to arrive at high mountain pastures. Crossing these, the path then picks up the Northwest ridge where the scrambling and terrain becomes increasingly complex and interesting as more height is gained. The fnal broad ridge brings us to the summit plateau.
Jebel El Kest summit rewards you with uninterrupted views in all directions and some time can be spent here enjoying the vistas before descending via the more traditional route to another col. The path then traverses a convenient rock terrace between giant rocky buttresses eventually leading to the south col where a faint track leads back to the narrow gorge and descent path back to Anergui.
