JEBEL EL KEST SUMMIT & STAY
Combine an ascent of the highest mountain in the region with a night in a traditional Berber dwelling at one the beautiful mountain villages nestled high on the flanks of Jebel El Kest. This itinerary offers an immersive experience combining adventure and cultural richness.
Commencing in Tafraout, you will transported to start point in one of the high mountain villages on the south side of the range via mountain roads that defy belief (not for the faint hearted). From here our walk begins, ascending through terraced hillside to pick up ancient but indistinct trade routes which ascend steep rocky valleys towards high mountain pastures and mountain cols. Access to the summit is gained via non technical but steep rocky terrain weaving its way towards the summit plateau. The summit boasts incredible views in all directions and we’ll spend plenty of time here to soak in the views, get those all important summit pics and refuel for the equally challenging descent.
Regardless of which route is taken, this hike involves an elevation gain of around 1000m, therefore a good level of fitness is required in order to complete this challenging but very rewarding day walk.
Upon your return to the village, you’ll enjoy traditional Berber cuisine prepared by your hosts. Meals often include tagine, couscous, fresh bread, and mint tea. Away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the village and surrounding terraced land to gain an appreciation of Berber life in the mountains, something that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Watch the changing light on the mountains and valley far below as the sun sets over the range and take advantage of spectacular night skies.
After a night spent in the mountains and a traditional Berber breakfast, you will be collected mid-morning and return to Tafraout. Undoubtedly one of the best ways to experience the Anti-Atlas.
